But what actually is generative AI? And why is everyone making such a big deal about it?

Don't worry — I'll explain it in the simplest way possible. No fancy tech words, no complicated stuff. Just plain and simple explanation that actually makes sense.


What Is Generative AI?

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new things. And when I say create — I mean actually create. Text, images, music, videos, code — all from scratch.

You give it a prompt (basically an instruction) and it generates something new based on that. That's it. That's the core idea.

For example — you type "write me a poem about rain" and generative AI writes a whole poem for you. You type "draw a cat sitting on the moon" and it creates that image. It doesn't just copy paste from somewhere. It actually generates new content every single time.

Google's own generative AI. Works similar to ChatGPT and is now built into many Google products you already use everyday.

DALL-E and Midjourney

These are image generators. You describe what you want in words and they creates a brand new image for you. No design skills needed.

GitHub Copilot

This one is for coding. It suggest code as you type and can even write entire functions for you. Developers love it because it saves so much time.

Spotify's AI DJ

Yes even Spotify uses generative AI now. It creates personalized commentary between songs that sounds like a real radio DJ talking just to you.

What Are the Downsides of Generative AI?

Copyright issues — Generative AI learned from other people's work. So who owns what it creates? This is still a big ongoing debate.

Job concerns — Some jobs that involve writing, designing or coding are changing because of AI. Some roles might shrink, but new ones are being created too.

Bias — If the data AI trained on has bias, the AI will reflect that bias in what it generates. This is a serious ethical issue that researchers are still working on.
